8 best management options for stye

A stye is a swollen, sensitive lump that develops on the outside (and occasionally inside) edge of the eyelid. It resembles a pimple or a boil in appearance. This lump, often called “stye,” develops when old germs, dead skin cells, or oil obstruct one of the oil glands. One’s eyelid may enlarge or tear, and it may be painful. Ideally, vision isn’t affected by styes, which disappear in a few days.

Symptoms of stye
Styes are caused by germs that invade an eyelid gland or eyelash follicle. Additionally, chronic blepharitis increases one’s risk of developing a stye. Here are some symptoms of stye:
Pain and swelling
Increased tear production
Crust formed around the eyelids
Itchiness

Treatment and cure for styes
Warm compress
Applying a warm compress is the quickest, safest, and most efficient treatment for stye at home. To treat an inflamed eye, all one needs to do is warm some filtered water, immerse a clean cloth in it, and cover the affected eye while keeping the other closed. For the greatest results, leave the compress on for 10 to 15 minutes, then repeat the process 2 to 4 times daily for a few days. To clear the blocked oil glands, gently massage the stye with a clean finger after using the compress. This can speed up the healing of the stye and also alleviate some pain and irritation.

Cleanse the eyelid with little water and mild soap
When washing the eye area, it is advisable to avoid using harsh, synthetic chemicals. Instead, the soap’s constituents should be non-allergic and non-irritating to the eyes. The skin around the eye is much thinner than the rest of the face. One can also mix a tear-free baby shampoo with warm water. Use a clean washcloth or cotton swab to gently wipe it from the eyes. This can be done daily till the stye has vanished. Keeping the eyes clean can help prevent developing new styes.

Antibiotic ointments
Using an easily available antibiotic ointment to assist treatment for stye is always recommended by doctors. Apply a quarter inch of the ointment inside the eyelid after pulling back the lid of the affected eye. However, to treat a stye that is too painful to tolerate, impairs vision, and resists this treatment, always consult a dermatologist or an eye doctor. Avoid applying topical steroids for stye. They might have negative effects. Ensure that any product used is designed for use in or on the eye before using it.

Warm tea bag
One can use a heated tea bag instead of a warm cotton compress. The most effective tea is black tea, which also has some antimicrobial effects and reduces edema. Like brewing tea, pour boiling water into a mug and add a tea bag. Steep the tea for approximately one minute. Place the tea bag over the eye once it has cooled sufficiently and leave it there for 5 to 10 minutes. For each eye, utilize a different tea bag to treat a stye effectively.

Coconut oil
In addition to other uses, coconut oil is also utilized to support eye health. By reducing inflammation, coconut oil is one of the key treatments or styes. Coconut oil not only has anti-inflammatory properties but also has antibacterial and antifungal properties. The area around the eyes can be treated with it without any risk. Use a clean finger or a cotton swab to apply a small amount of coconut oil to the afflicted eyelid to apply this cure. Before rinsing the oil off with warm water, wait for 15 minutes. Repeat this procedure three to five times per day for the best results.

Say no to makeup
If one has a stye, avoid wearing eye makeup. Makeup has the potential to exacerbate eye irritation and delay recovery. The bacterial infection could have originated from the cosmetics. Additionally, by transmitting bacteria to the cosmetics and instruments, one can risk spreading the infection to the other eye. Wash the reusable brushes regularly as prevention. Throw away any eye products that are more than three months old.

Avoid wearing contact lenses
If one typically wears contact lenses, styes may be uncomfortable and interfere with the eyes’ usual lubricating process. The tear film is made up in part of the oil produced in the eyelids. Therefore if there isn’t enough oil getting into the natural tears, the eyes may dry up more quickly. Until the stye cures, one should avoid wearing contact lenses if they have dry eyes as a result of the stye.

Chalazion surgery
A doctor might make a tiny cut in the stye to drain the pus if it doesn’t heal on its own. The doctor creates a tiny incision in the lump and administers a numbing chemical to the eyelid. Then the doctor drains the liquid and removes the debris accumulated inside the nodule. Usually, no stitches are necessary for this treatment for stye.
