Dry boxes – Types, uses and benefits

A dry box, also known as a dehumidifying cabinet or dry cabinet, is a storage container with low humidity levels. These storage units can be used to store sensitive items like a camera, protecting them from the effects of extreme humidity and fungal growth. Some boxes also come with organized protection, including lashing straps, pull-out shelves, and internal dividers. Dry boxes are used for many purposes across industries, particularly by manufacturers, electronic assemblers, and component distributors.

Types of dry box cabinets
The dry boxes have multiple uses and are mostly used to store valuable items like cameras and lenses, 3D printing films, and musical instruments. These come in various types.

  • Desiccant boxes
Desiccant boxes are simple storage boxes with a desiccant like anhydrous calcium chloride or silica gel. These are cost-effective, but the humidity level cannot be controlled or regulated. The reason is the difficulty in finding the desiccant quantity required to achieve the specific humidity level. Even these chemical substances can get saturated with the repeated opening of the boxes. It is also to be noted that some desiccants may harm the box contents if they absorb too much water.
  • Electronic dry boxes
The electronic dry boxes come with the Peltier Cooler that helps remove moisture from the air by condensing it. The rough adjustment of the humidity level is made with the help of the control dial. But in the more advanced and sophisticated designs, the settable digital hygrometer allows precise humidity level control. These boxes come in various sizes, so, one can choose the size as per the requirement. Some companies design and manufacture cabinets to maintain an environment of substantial humidity for a period of 10 days or 20 days if the cabinets remain closed and zero moisture is introduced.
  • Electronic dry boxes with desiccants
Some electronic dry boxes utilize molecular sieve desiccants that are multi-porous. These dry box cabinets are best suited to use in colder climatic regions.

Uses of dry boxes
The uses of dry boxes are vivid and multiple. These boxes are used to store any material that can get damaged by fungal growth due to moisture retention if left in the open. Some of the uses include:

  • Storing items made of leather, like shoes, bags, and blankets.
  • Keeping paper documents
  • Storing expensive craft items like leatherwork, and small figurines
  • Storing wooden musical instruments like guitar, cello, and violin.
  • Storing electronic components like circuit boards
  • Storing camera, lenses, and 3D printing filaments
  • Used in laboratories to store chemicals that require dry conditions

Importance of a dry storage box

  • Security and safety
The dry storage boxes help to protect valuables from damage when exposed to moisture. Thus, it provides an added layer of security and protection.
  • Protection from harsh weather conditions
Rains and snow can cause harm and damage to expensive items. Dry boxes help protect these items from harsh climatic conditions, which can support fungal growth.
  • Easy and convenient installation
Several dry boxes are easy and convenient to install and can be kept in any room of a house, office, or laboratory.
  • Improved storage space
These boxes provide extra and improved storage space for storing multiple things. Some dry boxes are compact in size, making them perfect for storing sensitive things while traveling.
  • Organized and systematic
The several compartments of the dry box make the entire storage process systematic. This additional facility for improved organization helps remove any confusion and clutter. It also makes it easier to find things when needed.
  • Versatile
The dry box cabinets offer versatility as they can be used to store various things, depending on the size of the item.
  • Durable
The dry boxes are durable since they are made of quality material that lasts for a longer period.
  • Safe transportation
The storage of the camping or hiking gear in dry boxes makes it convenient and easy to transport the items from one place to another without having to worry about their safety.
  • Accessibility
Storing things in dry boxes also offers easy accessibility to stored items. These are neatly organized and placed, so there is no hassle in finding them whenever needed.

Dry boxes are used for many reasons, as they provide complete protection to the stored items. However, it is important to research the company and its products before purchasing a dry box. Look out for options in the market and compare prices and features.
